According to a report by Daily Post, Wednesday, November 26, 2025. the former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani has offered fresh insight into the ongoing debate over the future of Igbos residing in northern Nigeria. Amid rising insecurity and repeated calls from some groups urging southeasterners to return to their ancestral homes, Sani insists that many Igbos living in the North have no intention of relocating.
The former lawmaker shared his opinion in a post on his social media platform, where he addressed the growing concerns among Igbo communities regarding personal safety following several incidents of violence reported in parts of the country.
Despite the fears circulating online, Sani maintains that the narrative suggesting a mass exodus of Igbos from the North does not align with on-ground realities.
Sani explained that his views were shaped by firsthand experience. He recounted attending an Igbo cultural celebration in Kaduna, where he observed a vibrant, organized, and deeply rooted community. According to him, the event showcased not only cultural pride but also the remarkable contributions of Igbos in the northern region.
He described the gathering as one filled with “businessmen, entrepreneurs, professionals, traders, academics, and families that have established strong social and economic foundations in Kaduna.” Sani noted that many of the individuals he interacted with expressed confidence in their future and saw the North as home a place where they had built businesses, acquired property, and raised their families.
The senator argued that the harsh rhetoric and often exaggerated warnings circulated on social media do not reflect the lived experiences of many Igbos in northern cities such as Kaduna, Kano, and Jos. Instead, he said, many southeasterners have found opportunities and stability in the region that they are unwilling to abandon based on what he described as fear-driven narratives.
In his post, Sani cautioned those urging Igbos to “return home” to rethink their position. He suggested that such advocacy often ignores the realities faced by people who have lived and worked in the North for decades.
Drawing an analogy, he compared the situation to someone advising a tenant in a distant city to abandon their investments and start over simply because of comments made online.
“Igbos in the North have established themselves over many years. They have businesses, homes, and communities here. Those calling for them to return home are wasting their time,” Sani stated.
