Former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi has fired back at speculation that he is angling to be a running mate in the 2027 elections, saying he never bought a form to be vice president.
Amaechi made the remarks on Monday, May 17, 2026, during an interview on Trust TV while discussing the contest for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential ticket. When asked about the possibility of serving as Atiku Abubakar’s running mate, he cut the interviewer short with visible frustration.
“Will you stop that nonsense? I didn’t buy form to be Vice President. Don’t you ever say that again,” Amaechi said.
The former Rivers State governor said his ambition is to contest for the presidency, not to play a supporting role. He described the idea of being Atiku’s running mate as repulsive and insisted he purchased the presidential nomination form with the intention of leading the party’s ticket.
The video of the exchange quickly went viral, sparking debate across social media. Some users backed Amaechi’s stance, saying it was right for him to clarify his position early. Others criticized his tone, arguing that dismissing the question so forcefully could hurt his image among party members.
The exchange highlights the jostling within the ADC ahead of its primaries. Atiku Abubakar, a former vice president, is also seeking the party’s presidential ticket, and reports have suggested he has been courting other aspirants, including Amaechi and Peter Obi, for a possible joint ticket.
Amaechi, who served as Minister of Transportation under former President Muhammadu Buhari and as governor of Rivers State for eight years, has positioned himself as a candidate focused on electoral reform. In the same interview, he reiterated a promise to introduce key electoral changes within six months if elected president in 2027….See More
