South African returnee, Okafor Jonathan Ugochukwu, has described his years in South Africa as living in constant fear, saying the environment felt more like a war zone than a place where migrants could peacefully pursue better opportunities.
Speaking during an interview on Vanguard News TV on Saturday, 18 July, 2026, Ugochukwu reflected on his experience in South Africa, where he said fear and insecurity became a daily reality.
According to him, the atmosphere created by repeated attacks on foreign nationals made it difficult to live or operate a business without worrying about becoming the next victim.
Describing his ordeal, he said, “Staying in South Africa is like a Mafia zone, like a war zone. Where your fellow blacks will see you as a threat.”
Ugochukwu said the hostile environment left him feeling unsafe despite moving to South Africa in search of better economic opportunities.
