Panic and anger gripped Amachi Amagu in Ogugu, Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, after a married woman was caught allegedly trying to kidnap pupils returning from school. The dramatic intervention by local youths has exposed fresh fears over kidnapping networks and raised questions about possible links to law enforcement.
According to residents, the woman was intercepted by vigilant youths as she attempted to take the children. Suspicion rose immediately, and the youths detained her on the spot to demand answers.
At first, she tried to cover her tracks. She told the youths that her husband was a tipper driver with no connection to security agencies. Not convinced, the youths asked for his phone number and called him using a fake story that his wife had been involved in an accident.
The man denied being nearby, said he was at work, and promised to send his sister. When the sister arrived, the story fell apart. She reportedly told the crowd that her brother was actually a serving police officer. The revelation stunned the community, with many asking how someone so close to law enforcement could be linked to such a crime.
The youths handed the suspect over to the authorities. But the situation took another twist when residents said police officers arrived in a Hilux van without being invited by the community. They took the woman away and allegedly blocked further access by the youths and local leaders, preventing them from following up on the case.
So far, the Ebonyi State Police Command has not released an official statement. The silence has only deepened suspicion, with many residents calling for a transparent investigation to determine whether this was a lone act or part of a wider kidnapping ring.
The incident has reignited fears about the rising wave of kidnapping for ransom across Nigeria. Parents in Izzi say they are now scared to allow their children walk home from school unescorted. Community leaders are demanding increased security around schools and stricter monitoring of suspicious movements.
For many, the case is disturbing because it involves someone allegedly tied to the police force, an institution meant to protect citizens. “If those expected to stop crime are involved, who do we run to?” one resident asked.
