Minister of Tourism and Culture Hannatu Musawa has warned that replacing Vice President Kashim Shettima on the APC’s 2027 ticket would pose significant risks for the party’s electoral prospects.
Speaking in an interview on MIC ON PODCAST, Musawa highlighted the political necessity of maintaining representation from Shettima’s demographic background. “I think if we toy with changing the construct of what we have now, it is a problem. I’m going to say it as it is—if there’s no Hausa Fulani Kanuri Muslim on that ticket, it’s going to be a hurdle. And that’s the reality of the way that people think,” she said.
The minister stressed the exceptional political engagement and sophistication of northern voters, particularly in the region Shettima represents. She described politics as central to their identity and sense of empowerment within Nigeria.
Musawa explained that northern core communities view elections as their primary mechanism for exercising national influence, making political participation a deeply ingrained cultural practice.
According to her, underestimating this political culture or attempting to reconfigure the ticket without understanding that politics functions almost as an identity marker for these communities would jeopardize the APC’s chances in 2027.
