According to a Facebook post on 25 July 2026, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has reacted to Ibrahim Traoré’s declaration that Sharia law would never be allowed in Burkina Faso.
He said the military leader was inexperienced. He also argued that Traoré lacked a proper understanding of the issues involved.
The islamic cleric said Traoré, whom he described as being 38 years old, had nothing beyond military training. He argued that the Burkinabè leader was too naïve to understand the society he governed. He added that Traoré also failed to grasp the realities of contemporary geopolitics.
Gumi further claimed that Traoré’s anti-sharia stance had handed extremist groups a powerful recruitment tool. According to him, the remarks could make it easier for extremists to recruit more fighters.
Earlier, Traoré had declared during a nationwide broadcast that Burkina Faso would never adopt sharia law. Although a muslim, he stressed that every citizen had the right to practise their religion. He also insisted that sharia law would never be introduced in the country.
The president also criticised Burkinabè students studying sharia law in Saudi Arabia. He said they should have acquired technological skills that could help develop Burkina Faso. Traoré warned the students to remain abroad. He added that they would not be allowed to return to the country.
