Former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani has raised fresh concerns over the spread of misinformation in Nigeria, releasing what he described as the “top fake news of last week” while warning that more fabricated stories are likely to surface in the days ahead.
In a post shared on his official X handle on Sunday, November 23, 2025, Sani highlighted four major claims that circulated widely across social media platforms but were later found to be false. According to him, these stories not only misled the public but also contributed to rising tension and confusion within the country.
Among the debunked narratives he listed was the rumour that the United States Congress had voted in favour of military aggression against Nigeria, a claim that generated significant online anxiety before being dismissed by authorities and fact-checkers.
Sani also referenced the alleged assassination attempt on Justice Omotosho, which trended, but was subsequently disproven by security agencies. Another widespread but false claim was that the Federal Government had shut down all unity schools, a story that sparked concern among parents and education stakeholders before being officially refuted.
The senator further noted the circulation of purported images of Nnamdi Kanu in handcuffs at Sokoto Prison, photographs that were later confirmed to be manipulated or unrelated to the IPOB leader.
Sani described the rapid spread of these fabricated stories as a troubling reflection of Nigeria’s ongoing battle with misinformation. He cautioned citizens to remain vigilant, verify claims, and avoid sharing unconfirmed reports.
The post has since drawn wide reactions from users, many of whom echoed his concerns about the scale and speed of fake news propagation across the country. Others urged government institutions, the media, and digital platforms to strengthen efforts in combating misinformation.
Sani’s remarks come at a time when Nigeria’s political climate remains tense, and public discourse is heavily influenced by online narratives, many of which are unverified or intentionally misleading. His intervention reinforces ongoing calls for improved media literacy and a more responsible information ecosystem.
