Operation Wetie: ADC Backs Makinde, Says Only Intending Election Riggers Are Afraid

As reported by Leadership, on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) expressed its support for Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde amid the debate regarding his recent remarks on “Operation Wetie,” claiming that his comments have been misinterpreted and taken out of their original context by critics.

The controversy began when Makinde made statements during an opposition summit in Ibadan, where he mentioned “Operation Wetie,” a period of political violence that occurred in Western Nigeria during the First Republic. This term is historically associated with the conflicts between competing political factions of that era.

His remarks quickly sparked various responses from political figures. Some individuals accused him of making a reference that might incite political violence, while others argued that he was simply drawing a historical analogy.

ADC’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, came to Makinde’s defense through a post on social media. He clarified that the governor was not advocating for violence, but rather he was alerting people about the dangers of disregarding early signs of political discord in a democratic society.

Abdullahi emphasized that opponents were distorting the governor’s message, pointing out that Makinde’s intention was about safeguarding democracy and making sure that political contests remain just and transparent. He mentioned that historical instances are typically referenced to provide lessons, rather than to instill fear.

He further remarked that mentions of historical conflicts should be interpreted as warnings aimed at averting potential future issues. He stated that those who advocate for free and fair elections should not feel alarmed by such conversations; however, he recognized that individuals who attempt to manipulate elections or suppress opposing viewpoints may be uneasy with such reminders.
