According to a report by Channels TV, on Monday July 20, 2026, Former Kano State Governor and National Democratic Congress (NDC) vice-presidential candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has confirmed that presidential candidate Peter Obi signed a formal, written agreement committing to serve only a single four-year term if elected in 2027.
Kwankwaso expressed complete trust in Obi, explaining that the pact is intended to ensure power returns to Northern Nigeria in 2031.
Addressing questions regarding political trust and power-sharing arrangements within the NDC coalition, Kwankwaso revealed that the single-term commitment was formalized through both party channels and a direct personal pact between the two leaders.
Detailing the structure of the agreement, Kwankwaso stated:
“We have accepted to put it on paper. We have done one for the party, and we have done one between the two of us. The agreement is that after four years he will come and work together, team together as a group, party, friends and involve everybody to work together so that after our term of 4 years from 2027 to 2031, it comes back to the north.”
The former Kano governor underscored that both leaders are aligned on upholding rotational presidency norms between the southern and northern regions of the country.
Under the terms of the agreement, Obi’s administration would focus on executing a single four-year mandate from 2027 to 2031.
Following the completion of that term, Obi and Kwankwaso plan to mobilize a broad political coalition to support a northern presidential candidate, restoring balance under Nigeria’s informal power-sharing framework.
