A Political Analyst and Security Expert, Dr. Majeed Dahiru, has argued that no southern military commander would have ignored the ethnic composition of the alleged coup plotters against President Bola Tinubu.
Speaking during an interview with Nigeria Info FM, Dr. Dahiru argued that ethnic considerations within the military played a crucial role in exposing the coup attempt. “No southern military commander will look at the composition of the coup, which is one-sided, and not counter it or do something to prevent it. So the reason why the coup was leaked in the first place to the Chief of Army Staff was because a Commander from the South must have saw it. And they will feel like are you sure this is not an attempt to also take our turn and take it back to this side?” he said.
The security expert explained that Nigeria’s ethnic divisions extend into the armed forces, making coordinated military action extremely difficult. “The polarities of Nigeria are also being played in the Army, the Armed Forces. So even if the entire Army agrees, for instance, to a coup, has the Navy concurred? Has the Air Force concurred? Has the entire Armed Forces, the entire Defence Forces agreed? Has the Police agreed? Has the Civil Defence agreed? How about Immigration? There will be a standoff one way or the other, depending on whose loyalty is being tested,” he stated.
