According to Premium Times on Saturday, October 4, 2025, the Borno State Police have raised concern about criminals using tinted vehicles to hide their identities and carry out crimes. The Police warned that armed robbers, kidnappers, drug dealers, and terrorists often exploit dark car windows to make it harder for law enforcement to catch them.
The police spokesperson, ASP Nahum Daso, said that their Crime Frequency Data shows tinted cars are linked to many serious crimes. He gave some chilling examples to explain why the new rules are needed. One case was the killing of a University of Maiduguri lecturer in April 2024. The killers escaped in a heavily tinted car, and CCTV footage could not clearly show their faces because of the dark windows. This made it difficult for the police to quickly bring the criminals to justice.
Another sad story happened on September 26, 2025, when three children locked themselves inside a dark-tinted car and died from suffocation. Passersby could not see the children through the glass and so could not help in time.
ASP Daso stressed that while there are legitimate reasons for tinting, like medical needs or VIP protection, criminals misuse the darkness to commit crimes. To tackle this, owners of tinted cars must now register and get permits that include biometric data and vehicle details. This helps the police track vehicles linked to crimes.
The police added there is no total ban on tinted windows, but the new rules will help keep Nigerians safer. The Force Public Relations Officer also said the police have not received any court order stopping the tinted vehicle permit scheme.Continue, Full, Reading>>>>
