My Mother Had Stroke In 2019; By The Time We Found Out,It Was Too Late—Sowore Opens Up In Church

Former presidential aspirant and human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, has emotionally opened up about his mother’s health condition and the difficult experiences his family faced during his detention under the administration of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Sowore made the remarks during a visit to the Family Worship Centre in Wuye, Abuja, where he met with church leader Sarah Omakwu. A video of the interaction was later shared on his official X account on Sunday, May 10, 2026.

While addressing members of the congregation during the visit, Sowore reflected on the influence his mother had on his life and upbringing, describing her as a woman of integrity, courage, and strong values who played a major role in shaping his character.

He also expressed appreciation for the reception he received at the church and acknowledged the presence of several notable individuals in attendance.

In his words, Sowore said: “Many things to many people, depending on the part of the church you look at, including if you look at this side of the church, the former secretary to the federal government is there. Something to him, something to you when I met you today. Very happy to be your guest.”

The activist later became emotional as he spoke about his mother’s medical condition, revealing that she suffered a stroke in 2019 during a particularly difficult period in his life and political struggles.

According to him, the condition was discovered late, making it extremely difficult for doctors to fully manage the situation by the time treatment efforts intensified.

Sowore stated: “I will tell you a little bit about my mother. My mother is still alive. But she is alive in a way that we can only be thankful for.”

He further added: “My mother had stroke in 2019; by the time we found out, it was too late.”

Continuing his emotional reflection, Sowore explained that his mother’s condition deeply affected him and members of his family, especially given the emotional and political pressures surrounding his detention and activism at the time.

According to him, despite her health challenges, his mother remained one of the strongest influences in his life and continued to inspire him through her resilience and sacrifices.
