My husband is not around now, and I am waiting for him to return before going to the station – Wife

According to a report by the Punch on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, several police officers from the Igbeba Police Station in Ijebu Ode have been detained by the Ogun State Police Command following allegations of extorting a local student. The disciplinary action comes after a detailed report exposed how the officers allegedly extracted N99,000 from Olawale Ayomide, a student traveling in his mother’s vehicle.

The incident occurred on October 7 when the officers stopped Ayomide while he was driving from Sagamu to Ijebu-Ode. They accused him of operating a vehicle without proper license plates, despite his explanation that his mother was still processing the registration documents. The situation escalated, leading to the financial extortion.

A significant breakthrough in the case came when one of the involved officers accidentally left his official police cap inside the student’s vehicle. This evidence helped substantiate the victim’s claims when he initially hesitated to report the incident to his family.

The victim’s mother, Mrs. Omolabake, confirmed ownership of the vehicle and expressed her distress over the situation. She discovered the police cap in the car and pressed her son for details about the encounter. Regarding their planned response to the authorities, she noted, “My husband is not around now, and I am waiting for him to return before going to the station.”

Police authorities took swift action after the media report came to light. According to a police source, the Commissioner of Police summoned the Igbeba Division Police Officer and the implicated officers to the state command headquarters in Eleweeran, where the officers were reprimanded and ordered into detention.
