“Most Of The Crime Committed Here Is Done By Igbo People, Our Brothers, Not Hausa-Fulani -Osita Obi

According to a report by Vanguard on Friday, November 7, 2025, Comrade Osita Obi, Convener of the Recover Nigeria Project, expressed that most criminal acts taking place in Anambra State and the South-East are carried out by indigenes of the region.

He explained that only a very small portion of the crimes can be linked to outsiders, and that many communities are aware of those responsible for various offenses within their areas.

He emphasized that the belief that criminal elements are largely from outside the region does not align with the reality on the ground.

In his view, the situation has continued partly because some individuals who are expected to contribute to resolving insecurity may also have interests tied to the ongoing challenges.

He noted that these individuals may include those in positions of authority, as well as some within the security system.

According to him, this has made efforts to curb the issue more complicated than it appears.

He pointed out that communities often know those involved but may not take meaningful steps to address the matter due to fear or silent approval.

Obi stressed that linking insecurity in the region mainly to Hausa-Fulani groups is misleading.

He maintained that while there could be cases involving people from outside, the overwhelming share of the crisis originates locally.

He explained that it is important for people to acknowledge this reality in order to address the problem effectively.

He stated that assigning blame to external groups can shift attention away from the core issues that communities must confront.

He also noted that insecurity has brought fear and disruption to daily life across many towns and villages.

He highlighted how economic activities have been affected, leading to reduced movement and business operations.

According to him, if communities work closely with security agencies and provide accurate information, it could help in restoring normalcy and reducing crime.

He believes that cooperation is essential in dealing with persistent threats.

Obi pointed out that some households shelter those responsible for criminal acts, either knowingly or unknowingly.

He explained that it is difficult to solve the problem if communities are unwilling to speak up.

He added that silence allows criminal elements to operate freely, he urged residents to take firm positions in protecting their own environments.

He further encouraged local leaders, youth groups, and cultural institutions to play active roles in identifying and discouraging harmful behavior.

He suggested that guiding young people toward constructive activities can help reduce recruitment into criminal activities, he called for collective efforts in restoring peace and security.

Obi maintained that addressing the issue requires honesty, courage, and cooperation.

He believes that recognizing the true source of the problem is the first step in creating effective solutions that will benefit communities across the region.

He said: “Most of the crime or criminality committed here is done by Igbo people, our brothers — not Hausa-Fulani.

“I am not totally exonerating them, but Hausa-Fulani contribute only about 2 per cent. The remaining 98 per cent is done by our brothers.”
