Kwankwaso Has Cult Followership In Kano; Obi Has A Large Followership On Social Media —ADC Chieftain

Dr. Ibrahim Mani, National Treasurer of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has addressed concerns about recent defections within the party, while also offering his perspective on political influence and voting patterns in Nigeria.

Speaking during an interview on Trust TV on May 5, 2026, Mani maintained that the ADC still retains a strong base of influential members despite the departure of some high-profile figures. He downplayed the impact of the exits, noting that only a limited number of key individuals had left the party. According to him, aside from Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, few other notable figures have exited, suggesting that the party’s structure remains largely intact.

Addressing the issue of political followership, Mani acknowledged that many politicians command significant support, but he drew a distinction between general popularity and what he described as “cult-like” loyalty. He pointed out that Kwankwaso, particularly in Kano State, enjoys a deeply rooted and highly committed base, especially within local political networks.

On Peter Obi’s influence, Mani recognized his wide support but argued that much of it is concentrated online. He suggested that while social media backing is visible and vocal, it may not always translate directly into traditional grassroots political strength.

Reflecting on the 2023 general elections, Mani noted that the political environment at the time was shaped significantly by religious considerations. He explained that campaign narratives and voter alignments were influenced by religious identity, which played a noticeable role in how support was mobilized across different regions.

He also referenced Obi’s campaign messaging during that period, stating that the former candidate positioned himself in a way that resonated with certain demographics while also framing his mission as one aimed at national recovery.
