In a recent video on Channels Television, Senator Ned Nwoko has criticized the prolonged delay in the prosecution of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, describing his continued detention as unjust and a reflection of judicial inefficiency.
Speaking on the matter, Nwoko, who represents Delta North Senatorial District, expressed frustration over what he called unnecessary delays in Kanu’s trial process. “Yeah, no, no, it has been — there’s a lot of delays in prosecuting him and all,” he said. “If you want to get him tried and convicted, get on with it, you know. But this is a guy who has been held unjustly, as I said, for so many months.”
The lawmaker emphasized that the situation calls for decisive legal action rather than indefinite detention, which undermines the credibility of the justice system. “As a lawyer, I find it disturbing that such a high-profile case could drag on without closure,” he noted. “If there’s evidence against him, present it in court. If not, let justice take its course and let him go.”
Nwoko further recalled that Kanu’s ordeal began under the previous administration, accusing former President Muhammadu Buhari’s government of politicizing the case. “The Buhari government taunted him,” he said. “I’m not talking about this government, but the last one handled his matter poorly and without regard for due process.”
He urged the current administration to take a different approach by allowing the judiciary to act independently and without bias. “This government must show Nigerians that it upholds fairness and the rule of law,” Nwoko stressed. “Justice delayed, in this case, is justice denied.
