In a recent statement via his official X account, human rights lawyer and former chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, Professor Chidi Odinkalu, has criticised the state of governance in Nigeria, raising concerns over what he described as growing foreign influence and weak local accountability.
”In Nigeria: America is in charge of security. France is in charge of taxes. UAE is in charge of healthcare. Screwdriver guy in Onitsha oversees intelligence. @officialABAT is in charge of defections to @OfficialAPCNg,” he wrote
In hias post, Odinkalu listed several areas of national life and linked them to foreign countries or individuals.
He suggested that security matters appear to be influenced by the United States, he also implied that France plays a major role in Nigeria’s tax system, according to him, healthcare decisions increasingly favour the United Arab Emirates.
These statements were not presented as official facts, but as criticism of government direction and dependence.
Odinkalu also mocked Nigeria’s intelligence system, he referred to a controversial reports of Onitsha based someone overseeing intelligence that lead to bombing of parts of Sokoto.
He accused President Bola Tinubu of encouraging political defections into the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC and suggested that this strategy weakens opposition parties and limits democratic competition.
The former rights chief used humour to express frustration with governance under the current administration and ended his message with a reference to the 2027 general elections, implying that current trends could shape the outcome.
