Samshudeen Omowura, the son of the legendary Apala music crooner, Ayinla Omowura, shares with The Punch correspondent his thoughts about growing up without his father, the circumstances surrounding the singer’s tragic death, the struggle to preserve his legacy, among other issues.
During the interview, Samshudeen Omowura was asked how old he was. In response, he stated that he is currently in his 40s.
When he was further told that it meant he must have been a child when his father died, Samshudeen agreed and explained that he was about three years old when his father, legendary Apala musician Ayinla Omowura, died on May 6, 1980.
When he was asked if he was the lastborn of the family, he said, “Yes, in my father’s eyes, I was his lastborn. But there was another child, Babatunde Kabiru, who was born after my father’s death. He is my younger brother.”
He explained that their mother had been pregnant with him when his father, legendary Apala musician Ayinla Omowura, died. He added that after the singer’s death, their mother gave birth to Babatunde. He also mentioned Sadiat and Kabirat as part of the children in the family.
When asked how many wives his father had, Samshudeen stated that the late musician had eight wives. He explained that six of the wives had one child each for the singer, while the remaining two wives had more than one child for him….See More
