The ongoing trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), took another controversial turn this week as his legal team raised alarm over what they described as a suspicious and medically unverified report presented in court. The report, submitted by the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) through the prosecution, was said to have been served to the defense just minutes before court proceedings began. This, according to the defense, robbed them of the opportunity to properly respond or consult with their client.
According to a video posted on the Official YouTube channel of SYMFONI, while making his speech outside the courtroom, a visibly frustrated IPOB lawyer stated, “If you look through this medical report, you’ll see the ailments they claim Kanu is suffering from.” He went on to question how, despite such serious medical claims, the same document could still conclude that Kanu was fit to stand trial. The lawyer pointed out the contradictions in the report and challenged the credibility of the entire medical process, accusing the NMA of abandoning professional ethics in a matter involving a human life.
He further insisted that the report did not follow any known medical protocol, noting that the document lacked basic elements such as dates of examination, specimen collection, or any reference to laboratory tests. He alleged that the medical body did not physically examine Nnamdi Kanu as ordered by the court and that the document submitted was based on informal interactions arranged by the Department of State Services, not by the judiciary. In his words, the so-called report was written “from the comfort of an office” and had no foundation in clinical fact.
The lawyer, joined by other members of the defense team, questioned the legitimacy of the report and warned the court against relying on such a document to make decisions affecting the life of their client. They described the timing of the report’s release as a strategic ambush designed to mislead the court and fast-track the commencement of the defense phase of the trial. Kanu is now expected to open his defense on October 24 and conclude by October 30, a move the lawyers say further demonstrates the speed and pressure being mounted on the proceedings.
As the legal battle intensifies, the case continues to polarize public opinion across the country. Supporters of Nnamdi Kanu and IPOB view the trial as politically motivated and ethnically targeted, while federal authorities maintain that the court is simply following due process. However, with claims of ambush tactics, unverified medical submissions, and ignored court orders now dominating the conversation, many are beginning to question not only the fairness of the trial but the integrity of Nigeria’s broader justice system.
