Former Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has recounted an incident from his time in office in which he was subjected to harsh and unwarranted criticism by a fellow member of the Federal Executive Council.
According to Daily Trust, the episode is detailed in his newly launched book, Headlines and Soundbites: Media Moments that Defined an Administration, where he reflects on key experiences during his tenure in the Muhammadu Buhari administration.
In the book, the former minister recounted an episode in which a petition alleging wrongdoing was submitted against him. He said President Buhari initially stood by him, expressing confidence in his integrity, before directing that a formal investigation be carried out to ascertain the facts.
He said, “One day when I went to see the President in his office, I noticed that his Aide-de-Camp (ADC) seemed a little uneasy when he saw me.
“After a while, he gathered the courage and said: Oga, I have a confession to make. Somebody wrote a petition against you and I forwarded the petition to the President after much pressure.”
In the book, Mohammed also recounted another moment that underscored President Buhari’s trust in him. He wrote that when a petition bearing his name was brought before the President, Buhari reportedly expressed disbelief, questioning the allegation attached to it.
Despite his initial reaction, the President allowed the matter to be investigated. Mohammed noted that the outcome of the probe completely cleared him of any wrongdoing.
The former minister added that, over the course of his service in the cabinet, he could not recall a single instance in which President Buhari declined any request he put forward.
