I Told A Cleric Of Different Faith That Our Fasting Aren’t The Same He Asked Me What I Meant? -Hayaba

Reverend Joseph John Hayab, Chairman of the Northern Christians Association and former Secretary of the Christian Association of Nigeria in Kaduna State, has described what he says are key differences between Christian fasting and the fasting practices of other faiths.

In an interview with LEADERSHIP on Sunday March 29, 2026, Reverend Hayab said he told a fellow cleric that Christian fasting involves a deliberate mental and spiritual closure of the day’s last meal, meaning worshippers intentionally refrain from eating from the end of dinner until they choose to break the fast.

He explained that Christian fasting goes beyond mere abstinence from food: it begins the moment a believer finishes their evening meal and mentally commits to not eating again until the fast is broken.

His words, “I was sharing with another faith cleric recently, and I said that our prayers and fasting are not the same. He asked me, ‘What do you mean?’ I said, because when we fast, we don’t wake up in the morning to eat, because we are going to fast.”…..See More
