The National Chairman of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), Ambassador Godknows Igali, has criticised Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s decision to travel abroad to meet President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the escalating political crisis in the state.
Igali made the remarks during an interview on Arise News on Saturday, January 10, 2026, while reacting to reports that the governor had flown out of the country to brief President Tinubu, who is currently on a private working vacation in France, following renewed impeachment moves by the Rivers State House of Assembly.
“I heard your intro saying the governor has flown to where the president is having a private working vacation to go and trouble him. These things shouldn’t happen,” Igali said.
The former diplomat argued that political disputes at the state level should first be handled through dialogue and internal mechanisms rather than being escalated to the president. He noted that Nigeria’s president is already burdened with national responsibilities and should not be encumbered with issues that regional leaders and elders are capable of resolving.
According to Igali, PANDEF’s intervention through the establishment of a high-level reconciliation committee was aimed at creating room for dialogue and preventing the Rivers political crisis from degenerating further.
He stressed that conflicts at sub-national levels require maturity, restraint and engagement among stakeholders, warning that bypassing regional mediation structures could worsen tensions rather than resolve them.
Igali reaffirmed PANDEF’s commitment to peace and stability in Rivers State, insisting that inclusive dialogue remains the most effective path to resolving the political standoff.
