A Nigerian man has exposed what he described as a deliberate scam at a fuel station after he secretly recorded attendants allegedly starting the pump meter at N5,501 before dispensing a single drop of fuel into his vehicle.
The man, who had visited the station to purchase N20,000 worth of fuel, said the attendants began the transaction without resetting the meter to zero, meaning he would have received significantly less fuel than he paid for if he had not been paying close attention.
What the attendants did not realize was that the man had already begun recording the entire encounter before the transaction started using a pair of Meta smart glasses. The device, which looks like ordinary eyeglasses but is equipped with a built-in camera, allowed him to capture everything that happened without alerting the attendants that they were being filmed.
The footage clearly showed the pump meter already displaying a reading of N5,501 before any fuel was dispensed. This means that out of the N20,000 the man intended to pay, he would have lost N5,501 worth of fuel from the very beginning, receiving only about N14,499 worth of product while being charged the full amount.
Upon noticing the discrepancy on the meter, the man immediately confronted the attendants, accusing them of deliberately failing to reset the pump before starting the transaction and beginning to dispense fuel without his authorization. The confrontation was captured in the recording, which has since been shared widely on social media.
The video has sparked widespread outrage online, with many Nigerians sharing their own experiences of being cheated at fuel stations across the country. Several users pointed out that this type of scam is not new and has been going on for years at various filling stations, with attendants using different tactics to shortchange unsuspecting customers.
Common tricks reported by motorists include starting the meter before the customer is ready, pumping fuel at a slow speed to manipulate the reading, distracting the customer while adjusting the meter, and resetting the pump before the customer can verify the final reading. Many Nigerians say they have lost significant amounts of money over time to these practices without even realizing it.
The incident has also drawn attention to the role of technology in holding businesses accountable. The fact that the man was able to discreetly record the entire transaction using smart glasses without the knowledge of the attendants demonstrates how modern technology can be used by ordinary citizens to protect themselves from fraud. Many commentators have praised the man for his awareness and quick thinking, with some suggesting that more Nigerians should adopt similar approaches when visiting fuel stations.
Consumer rights advocates have long called on regulatory bodies such as the Department of Petroleum Resources, now known as the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, to intensify monitoring and enforcement at fuel stations nationwide. They argue that the frequency of such complaints suggests that many filling stations operate with little fear of consequences, knowing that most customers will not notice the discrepancies or will not have evidence to support their complaints.
With fuel prices already placing a heavy burden on Nigerians following the removal of subsidies, the prospect of being cheated on the quantity received has added another layer of frustration for consumers who feel they are being squeezed from every direction. Many are calling for stricter penalties for fuel stations caught engaging in such practices, arguing that anything short of serious consequences will not be enough to stop the behaviour.
The video continues to circulate widely on social media, serving as both a warning to fuel stations and a reminder to consumers to remain vigilant during every transaction at the pump…See More
