At a time when Rivers State is grappling with a deepening political crisis, questions over leadership, restraint and institutional responsibility have taken centre stage, particularly within the State House of Assembly. The conduct of key actors in the unfolding impeachment drama has drawn sharp scrutiny, with concerns mounting that personal emotions and political loyalties may be overshadowing constitutional duty and the broader interests of the state.
Former presidential aide Laolu Akande raised this concern during an interview on Channels Television on Thursday, January 15, 2026, as he weighed in on the impeachment threats facing Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara. He criticised the Speaker’s public conduct, arguing that it diminished the seriousness of the constitutional issues before the legislature.
“When a governor is alleged to have behaved inappropriately, the next thing is not to launch into impeachment and have the Speaker doing drama on television, telling us that he is angry,” Akande said. He stressed that the office of the Speaker demands maturity and impartial leadership, especially at a time of heightened political tension.
According to Akande, the Rivers State House of Assembly should be focused on institutional dialogue and problem-solving, rather than public posturing that could inflame divisions within the state. He noted that lawmakers are elected representatives with an obligation to place public interest above political loyalty or personal grievances.
Akande also welcomed reports that some lawmakers were beginning to call for restraint after initially supporting impeachment moves, describing the shift as a positive sign. He urged the Assembly to engage the governor constructively and seek political solutions that would restore stability and confidence in governance.
The Rivers State political crisis, fuelled by a power struggle between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, has continued to raise national concerns about legislative conduct, democratic norms and the broader implications for governance in the state.
