The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency, NESREA, has launched an investigation into a suspected chemical spill on the Kaduna-Abuja Expressway after a white, foamy substance was discovered at the scene.
A team from the NESREA Kaduna State Field Office, led by State Coordinator Mr. Hena Dangari Emmanuel, visited the site as part of the ongoing probe.
During the inspection, the team held consultations with key stakeholders, including the Police Commander for Jere, ACP Sani Zubairu, the Federal Road Safety Corps Commander for the area, and the community leader.
According to preliminary findings, a heavy-duty truck was involved in an accident that led to the spillage of its contents on the expressway. The nature of the substance is yet to be confirmed.
To support the investigation, NESREA officials have gathered statements from relevant authorities and residents. Samples of the foamy substance, surrounding soil, and water from a nearby stream have also been collected and sent to the laboratory for analysis.
In a public advisory, NESREA strongly urged residents and motorists to avoid contact with the foamy substance, the water, and the affected soil until the investigation is concluded. The agency said the precaution is necessary to prevent possible exposure to hazardous materials.
NESREA stated that findings from the laboratory analysis will determine the next line of action, including remediation and enforcement measures, if any violations of environmental regulations are established.
