Civil rights activist and Executive Director of Intersociety, Emeka Umeagbalasi, has reacted to claims made by the New York Times regarding his organization’s data on religious killings in Nigeria. He said the newspaper misrepresented their position and falsely suggested that Intersociety does not verify its figures.
In an interview on Prime Time, a programme aired on Arise TV which was reported by DAILY POST on Tuesday January 27, 2026, Umeagbalasi explained that his organization thoroughly verifies its data before publication.
He stressed that the New York Times was “economical with the truth” in its report.
Umeagbalasi noted that Intersociety’s findings clearly show that both Christians and Muslims enjoy religious freedom in Nigeria.
He further revealed that their data estimates that between 2009 and 2025, no fewer than 125,000 Christians and about 60,000 Muslims were killed by Islamic jihadists.
His words, “Our data estimates that between 2009 and 2025, no fewer than 125,000 Christians and an estimated 60,000 Muslims were killed by Islamic jihadists.”
