According to a report by Leadership, on Sunday May 10, 2026, the chairman of the national convention planning committee of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Prof Usman Bugaje, has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress of trying to weaken opposition parties in Nigeria.
He made the statement at the Social Democratic Party national convention in Bauchi State, the event was held at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium and brought together party delegates from across the country.
He stated that efforts to reduce opposition strength are dangerous for democracy, he described such actions as one of the worst problems in a democratic system, he warned that any attempt to silence opposition voices would harm the country.
Bugaje alleged that some people within government institutions were helping to weaken political competition, he mentioned actors within the judiciary and the electoral body as part of the concern, he said such behaviour damages trust in democracy.
He referenced past military rule in Nigeria to explain that democracy always survives pressure, he said history shows that no system of intimidation can permanently stop democratic progress.
He told delegates that their actions are being watched by citizens and recorded by history, he said leaders who undermine democracy will face consequences in the future.
