General Christopher Musa (rtd), Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, has stated that the Federal Government will not neglect the families of military officers accused in the alleged coup plot against President Bola Tinubu’s administration. He said although the officers will face trial, their wives and children will continue to receive fair treatment, according to report by LEADERSHIP on Saturday January 31 2026.
In an interview with Turkish broadcaster TRT World, Musa explained that the indicted officers will be tried through a military court‑martial, and they will be allowed to defend themselves with legal counsel. He emphasized that the proceedings will be transparent and just, while the welfare of their dependents remains a priority.
Musa said the government understands the consequences of such actions but is committed to ensuring that families of the accused are not punished for the alleged offences of their loved ones.
Musa said, “The family members are not left alone. The government is also making sure that at least they are taken care of. The wives and children need to be looked after.”
His remarks came after the Defence Headquarters confirmed the arrest of 16 military officers and several civilians in connection with the alleged coup attempt. This confirmation followed weeks of speculation, after the military initially denied reports of arrests in October 2025.
