Adeboye: When I Told My Daughters, Don’t Marry A Jobless Man, They Claimed They Know The Bible

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has reiterated the importance of gainful employment as a foundation for marriage, drawing lessons from the biblical account of creation to support his stance.

In a recent sermon shared on YouTube, Adeboye addressed the topic of marital readiness, using scripture to underscore the need for men to have work before seeking a wife.

He referenced Genesis 2:15–18, which details God placing Adam in the Garden of Eden “to work it and take care of it” before creating Eve as his companion.

“Genesis chapter 2 from verse 15 to 18 shows that God gave man work before He gave him a wife,” Adeboye said. “That is why when some people got angry when I told my daughters, ‘Don’t marry a jobless man,’ and they claimed they know the Bible, I told them they don’t know the Bible.”

Adeboye elaborated that this divine sequence is instructive for believers, as it highlights that responsibility and provision are central to the role of a husband. “He gave Adam work. Take care of this garden before He now said, ‘I think this fellow should have a wife,’” he said.

The revered cleric explained that his advice was not meant to demean anyone but rather to ensure that young couples build a strong foundation for their future. “You have no work; don’t look for a wife,” Adeboye stressed, adding that marriage requires maturity, commitment, and the ability to provide.

His remarks quickly sparked renewed debates among Christians and the wider public, with many discussing the intersection of faith, economic readiness, and modern relationship dynamics.

While some agreed that Adeboye’s counsel reflects wisdom and biblical order, others argued that marriage should not be tied solely to financial status, noting that couples can grow and build wealth together.

Nonetheless, Adeboye maintained that his position is grounded in scripture and practical experience. He pointed out that financial instability is one of the leading causes of marital stress, insisting that it is better to prepare adequately before embarking on such a serious commitment.

“Work is not just about earning money,” he said. “It is about having a sense of responsibility, a purpose, and the discipline that comes with stewardship. When you have something you are accountable for, you are better positioned to lead a family.”

The RCCG leader has long been known for his forthright teachings on marriage, relationships, and family life. Over the years, he has advised men and women to approach marriage with prayerful consideration and practical readiness.

His latest statement comes at a time when economic pressures have made it increasingly difficult for young Nigerians to secure jobs, start families, or even meet basic living expenses.

Economic analysts say Adeboye’s message, while spiritually grounded, also points to a broader societal issue: the need for job creation and economic empowerment for Nigeria’s youth.

With unemployment rates still high and inflation affecting food and housing costs, many young people are delaying marriage and family planning due to financial constraints.

Members of the RCCG and other Christians took to social media to share their views on the sermon. Some said Adeboye’s words served as a wake-up call for young men to take personal responsibility for their lives before seeking to marry.

Others argued that the advice should also apply to women, encouraging them to be industrious and contribute meaningfully to their future households.

Adeboye concluded his message by reminding his audience that marriage is not just a romantic venture but a divine assignment that requires readiness on all fronts. “God’s plan is for you to be prepared,” he said. “Preparation brings peace, and peace sustains the home.” he said.Continue, Full, Reading>>>>
