According to Opara, Kanu named his witnesses and later found out the law used to prosecute him isn’t on record

Human rights lawyer and member of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s legal team, Barrister Maxwell Opara has raised serious concerns about the legality of the ongoing trial of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader.

Speaking during an interview on TV Platinum, Opara revealed that during consultations for Kanu’s defence, it was discovered that the very law under which he is being prosecuted “doesn’t exist.”

“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has listed the witnesses he intends to call in this matter,” Opara stated. “In the course of consulting, he discovered that the law he is being charged and tried doesn’t exist.”

Opara’s revelation has triggered fresh controversy around the prolonged legal battle between Kanu and the Nigerian government, which has been marked by multiple adjournments and widespread allegations of human rights violations. Legal analysts say if Opara’s claim is substantiated, it could undermine the credibility of the prosecution and possibly render the entire trial null and void.

The revelation also adds weight to growing calls for Kanu’s unconditional release, with several rights groups accusing the government of using the judiciary to suppress political dissent. Opara’s comments, which have gone viral on social media, have reignited debate over the rule of law and constitutional integrity in Nigeria’s justice system.
