According to a report by Punch Newspaper on Monday, January 26, 2026, Abubakar Gada, former federal lawmaker, has formally declared his intention to return to the Peoples Democratic Party ahead of the 2027 general election, bringing an end to weeks of speculation surrounding his political future and confirming his next step in the evolving political landscape of Sokoto State.
Gada made this known while addressing a gathering of his supporters in Sokoto, where he explained that his decision was motivated by the need to reclaim and rebuild the PDP in the state, which he said had lost direction due to what he described as prolonged leadership stagnation under the influence of former governor Aminu Tambuwal.
He stated that the situation within the PDP required urgent restructuring and renewed commitment, adding that his return was not based on personal ambition alone but on the belief that the party could still serve as a strong platform for political engagement and grassroots mobilisation in the state.
Gada also accused Tambuwal of failing to fully commit to the African Democratic Congress, despite both of them earlier indicating interest in the party, noting that six months after their joint move, there was still no clear evidence of active participation from Tambuwal in building the ADC structure in Sokoto.
He recalled that after joining the ADC in 2025, both himself and Tambuwal were regarded as joint leaders of the party in the state, however he stressed that leadership comes with responsibility, and that such responsibility must be demonstrated through consistent involvement in party activities and organisational development.
According to Gada, the alleged lack of participation by Tambuwal in ADC programmes and meetings created doubts among party members, leading to confusion about the true political direction of the former governor and weakening confidence in the leadership arrangement within the party.
He further explained that this situation made it difficult for the ADC to grow effectively in the state, as supporters were unsure whether to fully commit to the party or wait for clearer signals, which in his view slowed down mobilisation efforts and affected internal cohesion.
In the final part of his address, Gada explained that his statement was meant to highlight what he considered contradictory political moves that undermined trust and partnership within the ADC, and he used the following words to describe his position.
He said: “You cannot be talking to APC on one hand, being promoted as a vice-presidential option for Peter Obi on the other, and still refuse to register or allow your followership to register in ADC,” he alleged. “This level of contradiction is not partnership for progress.
