In a video shared on Facebook on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, Niger Delta activist and Kalabari traditional leader Asari Dokubo criticized well-known Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, questioning his credibility as a religious authority.
Dokubo’s comments come amid rising discussions about the influence of religious leaders in tackling Nigeria’s security challenges. He accused Gumi of setting a poor example for both Nigerians and Muslims by appearing to defend violent groups. “Sheikh Gumi sets a negative example for anyone claiming to be a Muslim scholar,” Dokubo said, noting that Gumi’s repeated public justification of criminal acts contradicts Islam’s core principles.
He emphasized that Islam upholds justice, the protection of innocent lives, and moral accountability. According to Dokubo, religious leaders have a duty to provide clear guidance, denouncing wrongdoing without ambiguity. “Neglecting this responsibility risks promoting violence and eroding trust in religious institutions,” he warned.
Dokubo further cautioned that Gumi’s statements might encourage criminal behavior and confuse communities already grappling with insecurity. “Islam advocates fairness and the sanctity of life. No scholar should justify or excuse acts of terror,” he added, stressing that such rhetoric could unintentionally legitimize violent actions and hinder law enforcement efforts.
While expressing his disapproval of Gumi, Dokubo clarified that his criticism was not aimed at Islam itself but at holding religious leaders accountable. “Nigerians need to distinguish between scholars who promote peace and those who provide excuses for violence,” he concluded.
