Former presidential candidate and activist Omoyele Sowore has criticized Nigeria’s Defence Minister, General Christopher Musa, describing him as “an overhyped talker” over comments linked to border security and the idea of constructing concrete border fences.
Sowore made the remarks in a post shared on his verified X account on Friday, January 16, 2026, where he questioned the relevance and practicality of border fencing in the current global and technological context.
In his post, Sowore said his concerns were rooted in what he described as outdated thinking within Nigeria’s security leadership: “This is one of the reasons I find Nigeria’s sensational Defence Minister General Christopher Musa oddly an overhyped talker.”
He argued that advocating physical border barriers in the present era showed a failure to adapt to modern realities: “Anyone advocating the construction of concrete border fences in 2026 is clearly trapped in the past.”
Sowore said Nigeria’s size, geography, and regional obligations made such an approach unrealistic and ineffective: “You cannot fence Nigeria (even though there ECOWAS protocols, buts let’s forget that for a moment).”
He further linked the issue of border security to broader socioeconomic conditions, insisting that physical barriers could not address underlying challenges: “You cannot fence in poverty, nor can you fence out the poverty of Nigeria’s neighboring countries.”
According to him, advances in technology have reduced the relevance of traditional border fortifications: “In a technologically advanced era, concrete borders have been rendered largely obsolete.”
Sowore also referenced the shifting position of the United States President Donald Trump, who was widely known for his advocacy of border walls during his time in office: “Even @realDonaldTrump, once obsessed with walls, no longer talks about fencing America.”
He maintained that global experience and historical developments had shown the limitations of relying on physical barriers as a primary security solution: “History, technology, and reality have all moved on but some people simply refuse to move with them.”
