Deborah Was In Broad Daylight Lynched And Stoned To Death By Her Fellow Schoolmates -Johnson

Former US Army officer Captain Bishop Johnson has raised the unresolved killing of Deborah Samuel Yakubu as a key factor shaping international perceptions of Nigeria’s security and human rights record, during a live discussion on Arise Prime Time following the recent US-Nigeria military strikes in the Northwest.

Speaking on the programme, Johnson recalled the incident in Sokoto State, stating that “Deborah Samuel Yakubu was in broad daylight lynched and stoned to death by her fellow schoolmates.” He stressed that years after the killing, those responsible have not been held accountable, a situation he said continues to damage Nigeria’s credibility abroad.

According to Johnson, such incidents make it “much more difficult for us to convince Americans otherwise” when the United States frames parts of Nigeria’s insecurity problem as religious persecution. He argued that events like the killing of Deborah Samuel are among the realities foreign governments see when assessing Nigeria, especially in Washington, where narratives around religious violence resonate strongly.

Johnson noted that while Nigeria’s insecurity includes terrorism, the crisis is more complex than a single issue. He pointed out that unresolved cases of mob violence, religious intolerance, and communal clashes contribute to how the country is viewed internationally. “These are some of the things that the Americans are seeing,” he said, adding that the absence of justice in such cases reinforces external suspicion and criticism.

The discussion placed the killing within the broader debate on sovereignty, communication, and foreign intervention, highlighting how internal failures continue to shape external actions and judgments about Nigeria.
