Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Chairman Taminu Turaki has expressed surprise that the rival faction aligned with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike received invitations to a mediation meeting convened by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan.
Speaking at a press briefing reported by Symfoni TV, Turaki explained the unexpected turn of events. “We were invited last night by the commission to attend the meeting this morning. Now, when we received the invite, we were told that it was in respect of an earlier request made by us to meet with INEC leadership and discuss and resolve some housekeeping issues. When we arrived this morning, however, we discovered that some former members of our party who had earlier been expelled were also invited,” he said.
The national chairman stated that INEC’s chairman described the purpose as seeking solutions to lingering problems within the PDP.
Turaki explained that his faction presented their perspective on the party crisis while INEC listened attentively. He noted that the electoral commission acknowledged pending Court of Appeal matters and cannot substitute for judicial authority but promised serious consideration of issues raised.
The chairman assured Nigerians that while awaiting INEC’s response, his faction will continue functioning as Nigeria’s leading opposition party.
