In 2014, Nigerian Custom Seized My 53 Containers; That Was How One Day, I Got Call From Turkey -Onunkwo

Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Seahorse Lubricants, Chief Dr. Ebuka Onunkwo, has recounted a defining moment in his entrepreneurial journey, revealing how the seizure of his containers by the Nigerian Customs Service in 2014 coincided with an unexpected breakthrough that reshaped his business career.

Speaking during an interview on Creative Lord TV, Onunkwo narrated how what appeared to be a major setback later turned into a turning point. According to him, Nigerian Customs seized no fewer than 53 containers belonging to his company at the time, an incident that nearly crippled his operations.

“In 2014, Nigerian custom seized my containers, about 53 containers. That was how one day, I got a call from Turkey. They asked me are you Ebuka Onunkwo, I said yes,” he said.

Onunkwo explained that the call, which came at a time of intense uncertainty and frustration, marked the beginning of a new chapter. The Turkish firm behind the call, he revealed, was Seahorse Company, a lubricant manufacturing brand seeking a reliable representative in Africa.

He described the development as miraculous, noting that while he was grappling with the loss of goods and regulatory challenges at home, opportunities were opening up beyond Nigeria’s borders. Following discussions with the Turkish company, Onunkwo was eventually appointed as the Seahorse representative and major dealer for Africa.

The business mogul said the experience taught him resilience and faith, stressing that adversity can sometimes serve as a pathway to greater opportunities. He added that the partnership with Seahorse not only stabilized his business but also expanded his footprint across the African continent.
