Those Requests Wasn’t Meant For Armed Forces To Do Tombola In Military Nightclubs” , Oshiomhole Speaks

Senator Adams Oshiomhole has raised serious concerns over the spending pattern of the Nigerian Armed Forces, questioning whether funds allocated for the fight against insurgency are being used for the intended purpose.

Speaking during a plenary session in a video shared by Channels Television, the former Edo State governor criticized what he suggested were questionable expenditures by military authorities.

Oshiomhole argued that recent requests brought before the Senate for additional funds must be scrutinized to ensure transparency and accountability. According to him, lawmakers approved billions of naira to empower the military to tackle insurgency, banditry, and other forms of insecurity threatening the country. However, he warned that such funds must not be diverted for frivolous or unauthorized uses.

In his words, “those requests were not meant for the armed forces to buy ice cream, it wasn’t meant for them to do Tombola in military nightclubs.”

The remark drew murmurs across the chamber, highlighting the sensitivity of his allegation and the growing concern over the persistent insecurity despite increased budgetary allocations.

Oshiomhole further emphasized that Nigerians are demanding results, noting that the military’s operational challenges cannot be blamed solely on insufficient funding. He insisted that the Senate has a responsibility to ensure that every naira approved for security is properly accounted for and directed toward frontline operations.

He urged the leadership of the armed forces to justify the huge financial commitments made by the federal government by improving intelligence gathering, strengthening operational capacity, and demonstrating measurable progress in the war against insurgency.

The senator also called on his colleagues to intensify oversight functions on all security agencies, arguing that accountability is essential for restoring public confidence. He stressed that with the nation facing heightened security threats, “there can be no room for waste, mismanagement, or excuses.”
