According to a report by The Cable on Thursday, November 20, 2025, a Federal High Court in Abuja has convicted Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), on all seven terrorism charges brought against him by the federal government.
The judgment was delivered on Thursday after months of legal proceedings involving witnesses, video evidence, and several submissions presented before the court.
The court determined that the prosecution provided enough material to establish the allegations in full, marking a major development in the long-running case.
The ruling followed a detailed review of the evidence that had been tendered, including materials linked to broadcasts and activities associated with the defendant.
Presiding judge James Omotosho stated in his ruling that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt.
He said the evidence brought before the court was sufficient and consistent with the charges contained in the case file.
According to the court, Kanu did not provide a credible response to the allegations and failed to counter the arguments presented by the prosecution.
The judge emphasized that the material facts provided in court remained unchallenged, which strengthened the prosecution’s position throughout the proceedings.
He said the defendant’s posture during the hearing did not support any meaningful defence.
The judge also described Kanu in terms that highlighted concerns about his activities and the impact of his actions.
The court stated that the behaviour attributed to him in the evidence did not align with what is expected within a lawful and responsible setting.
The ruling further noted that the conduct identified in the broadcasts and instructions examined during the trial contributed to the court’s decision.
The judge pointed out that the case went beyond political expression and involved acts that created significant security concerns within the country.
Justice Omotosho also addressed Kanu’s long-time claim of being a freedom advocate. The court held that such claims could not justify actions taken outside legal processes.
According to the ruling, the defendant’s explanation for his activities did not align with constitutional provisions guiding civic and political expression.
The court maintained that matters relating to self-determination must follow established legal channels and cannot be pursued through acts capable of threatening peace or public safety.
The judgment stressed that the law provides procedures for addressing such issues without resorting to conduct that conflicts with national security.
He said, “I must say, here, that the defendant has always claimed to be a freedom fighter and only seeking justice for his people… Any self-determination not done in accordance with the rules and laws of the country is illegal.”
With the judgment delivered, the court affirmed that all seven charges had been fully proven.
The decision represents one of the most significant legal outcomes related to activities of IPOB and its leadership.
The court noted that the case had been handled with careful consideration of the evidence and the implications of the defendant’s actions as presented by the prosecution.
Further proceedings will determine the next steps based on the conviction, while legal stakeholders continue to follow the case closely.
