On 20 November 2025, the Federal High Court in Abuja convicted Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), on seven counts of terrorism-related charges.

Shortly after the verdict was delivered, the Federal Government, through its prosecution team, formally applied for the death penalty during the sentencing phase.

The prosecution argued that five of the counts fall under Section 2(3) of the Terrorism (Prevention) Amendment Act 2013, which prescribes capital punishment without option of a fine or lesser sentence.

The presiding judge, Justice Binta Nyako, reserved sentencing for later the same day after hearing submissions from both the prosecution and the defence team.

The development follows years of legal proceedings that began with Kanu’s arrest in 2021 after his extraordinary rendition from Kenya.

The case has remained a high-profile matter in Nigeria’s judicial and political landscape. As soon as the prosecution’s demand for the death penalty was made public, the news spread rapidly across social media platforms and traditional media outlets, triggering widespread discussion across the country.
