In a recent interview on TVC News, Right Honorable Obi Aguocha, member of the House of Representatives representing Ikwuano North and South Federal Constituency, spoke on the ongoing trial of his friend and former schoolmate. According to Aguocha, his presence in court was motivated by both friendship and his responsibility as a national assembly member, emphasizing the need for mercy and consideration of human factors in judicial proceedings.
“He’s almost 56 or 57 years old and has been absent from his family, children, and community,” Aguocha stated, highlighting the profound personal and social impact of a trial that has lasted nearly a decade. He explained that such prolonged detention disrupts family life and deprives communities of their members, underscoring the importance of balancing justice with compassion.
Aguocha appealed to the court to temper justice with mercy, stressing the broader societal implications of the case for stability and peace in Nigeria. He also called on the prosecution to reflect on comparable offenses by others and urged fairness in the administration of justice, pointing out that clemency could foster national reconciliation.
He clarified that he was not acting as legal counsel but as a friend and representative of the people, offering his perspective as someone who has known the accused since primary and secondary school. Aguocha emphasized that his intervention was humanitarian, aiming to provide context for the court’s consideration and highlight the human dimension of justice.
Concluding his statement, he thanked the court for allowing him to address it as a friend of the court, reiterating his commitment to representing his constituents and advocating for both fairness and peace in Nigeria’s judicial system.
