Speaking during an interview on Trust TV, the Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Northern states, Reverend John Hayab, has shared his personal experience and involvement in trying to prevent violence during the confrontation between members of the Shi’a Islamic Movement and the Nigerian military in Zaria.
Reverend Hayab said that despite being a Christian leader, he was among the first people contacted by the Shi’a group on the night of the incident.
He explained that he immediately took action by reaching out to key government and military officials to calm the situation and restore order.
“I can tell Nigerians here to listen: on the night that there was a problem in Zaria between the Shi’a and the military, I’m a pastor, and I was among the first people the Shi’a group called. I was in Lagos. I remember calling General Shekau, who was then the spokesman of Burutai. If he watches this, he will confirm it to you. I even called the then almighty El-Rufai, who was the governor of Kaduna State, and when he didn’t pick, I sent him a text. I said, ‘Let’s stop this,’” Reverend Hayab stated.
Reverend Hayab emphasized that his role as a religious leader goes beyond denominational boundaries, as the protection of human life and the promotion of harmony are responsibilities shared by all.
He further called on both Christian and Muslim leaders to continue fostering dialogue and understanding, stressing that collaboration and communication remain the best ways to prevent conflicts and ensure lasting peace in the country.
