I’m Not A Fan Of Jonathan; He Suspected Me Because Of My Work, But You Have To Commend Him -Sanusi

In a recent video shared on TV Platinum, the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi, reflected on his time as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and his relationship with former President Goodluck Jonathan. The outspoken traditional ruler offered a balanced perspective on the former president’s actions during a critical period in Nigeria’s economic history.

Quoting him directly, Sanusi said, “I’m not a fan of Jonathan; he suspected me because of my work, but you have to commend him.” He explained that while there were moments of tension between him and the Jonathan administration, particularly concerning transparency and fiscal policies, the former president still demonstrated commendable restraint and leadership when it mattered most.

Sanusi cited the 2012 fuel subsidy controversy as a key example, recalling how Jonathan made a difficult compromise to prevent national unrest. “He was determined to remove the subsidy,” Sanusi said, “but he compromised to save Nigerian lives at a time when suicide bombings were rampant. That decision showed leadership and compassion.”

He added that many of the economic challenges Nigeria faces today could have been mitigated if the government had fully implemented subsidy reforms back then. Despite his disagreements with Jonathan, Sanusi maintained that the former president deserves recognition for making tough choices in turbulent times.

The Emir concluded that acknowledging good leadership, even from those one disagrees with, is essential for national growth and truthfulness in public discourse.
