They Chose To Pardon Herbert Macaulay Among Drug And Capital Offenders, It’s Cynical – Odinkalu

Chidi Odinkalu, a renowned human rights lawyer and former chairman of the national human rights commission has taken to his official X handle to slam the decision of the federal government to include Herbert Macaulay, a national icon on the list of those granted presidential pardon. According to the statements which were shared on his official X handle, he pointed out that the choice was cynical.

It was no longer news that the presidential pardon granted to several individuals which included capital offenders and drug related offences stirred controversies after the list surfaced online.

However, in a recent statement which was shared on his official X handle, a former chairman of the national human rights commission and renowned legal expert, Chidi Odinkalu lamented over an inclusion.

Herbert Macaulay, a national icon was amongst those granted presidential pardon by president Tinubu after a careful deliberation with the national council of state, however, Chidi Odinkalu found his inclusion contentious.

According to the now viral statements which were published on his verified X handle on Sunday October 19th 2025, he pointed out that the choice to pardon him among capital offenders, drug offenders, illegal miners and white-collar convicts was cynical.

Chidi Odinkalu, well respected and admired for his boldness while demanding for good governance and accountability, asserted that the federal government did not do well in not according maximum respect to the late national icon, Herbert Macaulay.
