In an interview with The Sun on Sunday, September 6, 2026, Rabiu Suleiman Bichi, the former Secretary to the Kano State Government and ex-chairman of the Kano State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), expressed concerns that Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso’s political partnership with Peter Obi could jeopardize his electoral prospects in Kano State.
Bichi observed that Kwankwaso’s alignment with Obi poses a significant challenge for the former Kano governor within his home state. He pointed out that this political relationship may not resonate well with many Kano voters, noting that Obi lacks substantial political backing in the region.
According to Bichi, this sentiment is well-recognized among political figures and residents, with Kano voters historically favoring northern political interests and candidates from rival parties.
He suggested that Kwankwaso’s collaboration with Obi might diminish his political power in the state, emphasizing the importance of political alliances during elections, as voters tend to evaluate the party, candidate, and their supporters before making a decision.
Bichi indicated that Kwankwaso’s current partnership could become a liability if he seeks to oppose President Bola Tinubu’s political influence in Kano, urging that this factor should be taken into account when assessing the various political factions ahead of the elections.
He maintained that the APC stands to gain from this situation, bolstered by its expanding political network in Kano and the support Tinubu enjoys among party members.
Bichi added, “It’s important to note that Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso is now a Vice Presidential candidate alongside Obi, and the people of Kano do not accept Obi. This is widely understood. There’s no point in denying it. Everyone knows that Kano is not for Obi.
