The Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission (NCPC), Bishop Prof. Stephen Adegbite, has called on the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) to exercise restraint regarding the frequency of their visits to President Bola Tinubu, cautioning against any single bloc appearing to dominate access to the Presidency.
Speaking during an interview broadcast on TVC News on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, Adegbite stated that while religious leaders have every right to consult with the Head of State, the Catholic bishops have engaged President Tinubu twice within the past year.
Bishop Adegbite emphasized that interactions between spiritual leaders and government officials are routine and beneficial, but stressed that access should reflect the diversity of the broader faith community.
“Religious leaders have the right to visit the Presidency, and Mr. President in particular, and that will not be the first time. But I think the Catholic bishops need to exercise some restraint, because in the last twelve months or thereabouts, that will be the second time they’ll be visiting Mr. President,” Adegbite stated during the television appearance.
The NCPC boss highlighted the organizational structure of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), reminding the public that the association comprises five distinct blocs, of which the Catholic Church is only one.
Representing Diverse Blocs: Adegbite noted that other major Christian bodies including the Christian Council of Nigeria (CCN), the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), the Organisation of African Instituted Churches (OAIC), and TEKAN/ECWA represent substantial segments of the nation’s Christian population….See_More
