Mr. Olatunde Zacchaeus, a teacher who was among the victims of the abduction at a secondary school in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, has revealed that after returning home, his wife told him many people had believed he would never be captured by the gunmen because of his perceived ability to outrun danger.
Speaking during an interview on Nigeria Info FM on Friday, 17 July, 2026, Zacchaeus reflected on conversations he had with his family after surviving the traumatic ordeal. He said his wife shared with him what friends and acquaintances had been saying during the period of uncertainty following the attack.
According to him, “When I got home, my wife was telling me that everybody was saying ‘they trust me, they cannot capture me, if it turns to running, nobody can meet me.'”
The teacher said he was surprised to hear that many people had expressed confidence that he would escape the attackers if the situation required him to run. However, he had earlier explained that his ability to flee was severely limited because he was already suffering from arthritis in his left leg before the attack, a condition that worsened as he escaped through a window and into the bush.
