JUST IN: Opposition Will Cry Electoral Fraud If Tinubu Wins Again, Because His Going Too — Senate President Akpabio

Senate President Godswill Akpabio says opposition parties will allege electoral fraud if President Bola Tinubu wins his re-election battle in 2027.

Akpabio made the comment on Tuesday while speaking with journalists at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja.

The Senate President said Nigerians should expect the usual pattern of post-election criticism from opposition groups.

“If President Tinubu wins his re-election, the opposition parties will come out and say there was electoral fraud,” Akpabio stated. “That is what they always do. They prepare their statement before the results are even announced.”

He added that the All Progressives Congress, APC, is focused on delivering results that will earn votes, rather than responding to “preemptive allegations.”

“Our job is to work, show Nigerians what we have done with the economy, infrastructure, and security, and let the people decide,” he said.

The remark comes as political activity begins to pick up ahead of 2027. President Tinubu has not formally declared for a second term, but APC leaders have repeatedly said he deserves another four years to consolidate reforms.

Opposition parties, including the PDP and Labour Party, have been critical of the administration’s handling of inflation, fuel prices, and security. Several opposition figures have also said they will unite or field stronger candidates to challenge Tinubu.

Akpabio’s comments suggest the APC is already framing the 2027 contest as one between performance and “sour grapes.”

APC supporters online backed Akpabio, saying opposition parties rejected the 2023 results and are likely to do the same in 2027. “They said it in 2023. They will say it again,” one X user posted.

Opposition voices pushed back. A PDP chieftain said the issue is not “crying fraud” but ensuring INEC is independent, security is neutral, and votes count. “If elections are free and fair, everyone will accept the outcome,” he said.

Civil society groups urged all sides to focus on credible polls. “Instead of predicting fraud, let’s demand transparency now,” a Yiaga Africa representative said.
