Senator Victor Umeh, representing Anambra Central, has said the government is focused on Peter Obi because they know Nigerians love him, adding that opinion polls being secretly conducted by the government show his profile is rising by the day. He insisted that Obi remains a serious threat to the ruling party ahead of 2027 and will win if allowed on the ballot.
Speaking in an interview with Channels Television, Umeh made this assertion while stating that nothing has changed since 2023 because the issues Obi campaigned against have remained the same or worsened.
He explained that Obi offered real change in governance by cutting costs and making the welfare of citizens primary in government policies. He noted that insecurity and the high cost of living still trouble Nigerians.
He pointed out that filling the tank of a car now costs close to 200,000 naira, and those with two cars will spend about 500,000 naira, with no sign of relief. He said many workers no longer drive to work.
Umeh stated that Obi is still very dreaded; otherwise, the government would have ignored him. When asked if Obi can win, he responded that he will win, and that is why they do not want him on the ballot.
He claimed the government is conducting opinion polls through people they pay, and the results they get back are stunning. He said the government is stunned that Obi is rising daily in stature and profile instead of diminishing. Umeh concluded that any candidate with such growing appeal is one the ruling party has to worry about.
