1985 Coup: They Woke Me Up At 3:00 a.m, I Was Newly Married, I Opened Door And Saw Soldiers-Irabor

Veteran broadcaster Sunny Irabor has recalled how soldiers woke him in the early hours of the morning during the military coup that brought to power in August 1985.

Recounting the events, Irabor said: “When in 1985 that Babangida’s coup came that Abacha announced. They came to wake me up at 3:00 a.m. I was just newly married. So I went to open door and I saw some soldiers. They said you are wanted at the station. Quickly, I went to the station and then the announcement was made. I didn’t make any announcement, our job was just to play the martial music.”

According to Irabor, he was unexpectedly summoned from his home in the middle of the night by soldiers who instructed him to report immediately to the broadcast station.
