According to a report by DAILY POST on Sunday 28th June 2026, the National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Samuel Anyanwu, has formally declared his ambition to contest the 2027 Imo State governorship election, insisting that the time has come for him to lead the state.
Anyanwu made the declaration in Owerri during the inauguration of the Polling Unit Movement for Sam Daddy, a political support group created to mobilize grassroots backing for his governorship aspiration.
Reflecting on Imo’s political history, he noted that he, Governor Hope Uzodimma, former Governor Ikedi Ohakim, and former Governor Emeka Ihedioha were all influential members of the PDP; He pointed out that while the other three have all governed the state, he has yet to be given the opportunity.
“I, Hope Uzodimma, Ikedi Ohakim, and Emeka Ihedioha were four strong PDP members; By God’s grace, the other three have all governed Imo State, while I have remained; I have now come to take my turn, and I believe other aspirants will give me the chance,” Anyanwu said.
He acknowledged that political power is not freely handed over but maintained that he remains focused and determined to achieve his goal.
The PDP chieftain also expressed confidence in the party’s prospects, saying it has continued to grow stronger, become more united, and attract thousands of new members across the state.
According to him, the PDP remains the preferred political platform for many residents of Imo, adding that the party is committed to delivering responsible leadership.
Anyanwu urged members of the newly inaugurated support group to intensify grassroots mobilization, particularly in rural communities, to strengthen the party’s chances ahead of the election.
He also warned against electoral malpractice, stating that the PDP would deploy party agents to every polling unit to monitor the voting process and ensure that every vote is protected until the final results are announced.
He added that other political structures, including the Divine Mandate and the Mass Movement for Sam Daddy, would work together to build support for his governorship bid across the state.
